Hurricane Isaias Approaches the Florida Panhandle: Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach & Destin Property Owners Should Prepare

Hurricane Isaias is approaching the western Florida Panhandle, bringing the potential for destructive winds, dangerous storm surge, heavy rain, flooding and tornadoes.

Property owners from Pensacola and Navarre to Fort Walton Beach and Destin should complete preparations and follow instructions from local emergency officials.

For homeowners and business owners, the priority right now is protecting yourself, your family and your property as safely as possible.

Once the storm passes, the next step will be assessing any hurricane damage and determining whether an insurance claim needs to be filed.

Document Hurricane Damage Before Making Repairs

If your property is damaged by Hurricane Isaias, document the condition as thoroughly as

possible before permanent repairs are made.

Take photos and video of visible damage, including:

  • Roof and exterior damage

  • Missing or damaged shingles, tile or metal roofing

  • Interior water damage

  • Ceiling and drywall staining

  • Damaged flooring, cabinets and personal property

  • Broken windows, doors or exterior components

  • Fallen trees or debris impacts

  • Flooding or water intrusion

Temporary repairs may be necessary to prevent additional damage, but keep receipts and photograph the damage before and after those repairs whenever it is safe to do so.

Hurricane Damage Isn't Always Obvious

One of the difficulties with hurricane insurance claims is that significant property damage may not always be immediately visible.

High winds can damage roofing systems without creating an obvious opening in the roof. Wind-driven rain can enter around roofing, windows, doors and exterior openings. Water can also travel through wall and ceiling assemblies before the full extent of the damage becomes apparent.

A quick visual inspection does not always tell the entire story.

Filing a Hurricane Insurance Claim in the Florida Panhandle

Your insurance company will send an adjuster to inspect the property after a claim is reported. That adjuster works for the insurance company.

A public adjuster works for YOU.

Banner Adjusting & Claim Consulting represents homeowners and business owners during the insurance claim process. We evaluate the damage, prepare and document the claim, communicate with the insurance carrier and advocate for the amount necessary to properly repair covered damage.

We have representation in the Pensacola area and assist policyholders throughout the Florida Panhandle, including Pensacola, Navarre, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Escambia County, Santa Rosa County and Okaloosa County.

Before You Accept an Insurance Settlement

Insurance estimates following a major hurricane can sometimes overlook portions of the damage or the work required to properly complete repairs.

Before accepting a settlement or closing a Hurricane Isaias insurance claim, make sure you understand:

  • What damage the insurance company has agreed to cover

  • What damage has been excluded or denied

  • Whether the repair quantities are accurate

  • Whether all necessary repair operations are included

  • How your hurricane deductible applies

  • Whether additional damage can be documented through a supplemental claim

If something doesn't look right, you do not have to simply assume the insurance company's first estimate is the final word.
